The publication covers engineer reconnaissance tasks, team capabilities, command and support relationships, and reconnaissance support to mobility, countermobility, survivability, and other environments. It specifies technical methods for route, road, bridge, gap-crossing, infrastructure, environmental, and airfield reconnaissance.

Engineer reconnaissance consists of tasks that are undertaken to obtain (by visual observation or other detection methods) information about the activities and resources of an enemy or adversary or to secure data concerning the meteorological, hydrographical, or geographical characteristics of a particular area. (paragraph 1-1)
Engineer units do not have designated reconnaissance organizations. (paragraph 1-1)
The assessment requires less time, but it provides less technical detail. (paragraph 1-28)
Infrastructure reconnaissance is a multidisciplinary reconnaissance focused on gathering technical information on the condition and capacity of existing public systems, municipal services, and facilities within an assigned area of operations. (paragraph 5-36)
