It covers intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance synchronization, planning, preparation, execution, identification levels, and sample management. It requires plans and matrices to include key information and be accompanied by a CBRN ISR overlay, and requires chain of custody for CBRN samples.

There is no set format for them, but they do have key pieces of information and should always be accompanied by a CBRN ISR overlay that graphically depicts the information contained in the plan and matrices.
There are three modes associated with CBRN R&S. (paragraph 4-2)
The following conditions may result in the commander directing a dismounted CBRN R&S mission: Time is available. Detailed CBRN R&S is required. Stealth is required. (paragraph 4-4)
During surveillance operations the standoff method is conducted to provide early warning, tracking and in some cases, identification of a CBRN hazard. (paragraph 4-7)
Sample management includes the development of a sample management plan, selection of sample collection areas/locations, documentation of missions, and identification of key tasks associated with specific sample management operations. (paragraph 6-3)
