It covers eligibility, benefit levels, approved education and training, documentation, and the six-year SMCR obligation. It requires qualifying personnel to complete specified service, training, education, and documentation requirements.
Effective 1 April 1993, educational assistance is authorized for eligible individuals for pursuit of an approved program of undergraduate education at the rate of 190 dollars each month for participating in a full-time program of education, 143 dollars each month for participating in a three-quarter-time program of education, 95 dollars each month for participating in a half-time program of education, and 43 dollars for each month of less than half-time participation. (paragraph 3)
Basic eligibility expires 10 years after the established date of basic eligibility. (paragraph 5)
Members who are prevented from pursuing an educational program because of a physical or mental disability incurred or aggravated in the line of SMCR duty may apply to the VA for an extension of their period of eligibility. (paragraph 5)
Members who enlist, reenlist, or extend in the SMCR for a period of not less than 6 years shall, at the time of such agreement, complete an SOU. (paragraph 5)
The expanded MGIB-R program extended benefits for vocational/technical training include on-the-job training, correspondence courses, independent study, cooperative study, and flight training (The member must possess a private pilot’s license and meet the medical requirements for a commercial license before beginning flight training.). (paragraph 3)
