It defines handicapped individuals, disabled veterans, reasonable accommodation, qualified individuals, targeted disabilities, and 700-hour appointments. It assigns program duties and requires nondiscrimination, affirmative action, fair employment opportunities, and reasonable accommodation.
The Commandant of the Marine Corps is committed to the policy of assuring that equal employment opportunity (EEO) be provided to all persons with disabilities, including those who become disabled after appointment; and that qualified individuals with handicaps, have the opportunity to be hired, placed, promoted, and reasonably accommodated. (paragraph 3)
A reasonable accommodation is not required if the agency can show that the accommodation would impose an undue hardship on the operation of its program. (paragraph 4)
An employee is considered "qualified" if he or she can, with or without reasonable accommodation, perform the essential functions of the position without endangering the health and safety of the individual or others and who meets the experience and/or educational requirements and criteria for appointment under one of the special appointing authorities of handicapped persons. (paragraph 4)
A 700-hour appointment is a temporary appointment of a disabled individual which enables an activity to determine if an individual is able to perform the duties of the position before conversion to a continuing appointment. (paragraph 4)
Providing, per reference (e), reasonable accommodation to the physical and mental limitations of a handicapped applicant or employee, as long as the applicant or employee qualifies for it and the accommodation does not cause undue hardship on the organization. (paragraph 6)
