It defines the AF/HO’s role within the Air Staff and its relationships with Department of the Air Force leadership and organizations. It requires policy, guidance, oversight, preservation, museum, art, and historical documentation activities.
Consistent with 10 USC §§ 9013 and 9031, and as documented by paragraph 4.3. of Air Force Mission Directive (AFMD) 1, Headquarters Air Force, and this Headquarters Air Force Mission Directive (HAFMD), there is a Director of Air Force History and Museums Policies and Programs (AF/HO) for the Air Force and Space Force and is part of the Air Staff. (paragraph 1)
Subject only to the authority, direction, and control of the Secretary of Defense (referred to as Secretary of War (SecWar)), the SecAF is responsible for, and has all legal authority necessary to conduct, the affairs of the DAF. (paragraph 2)
The AF/HO furnishes professional assistance to the SecAF, the Under Secretary of the Air Force, the Assistant Secretaries of the Air Force and reports directly to the CSAF and is answerable to the CSO for Space Force history matters. (paragraph 2)
The AF/HO is specifically responsible for: 3.1. Establishing policy and guidance for and directing the operations necessary to create and preserve a thorough record of DAF institutions and activities. (paragraph 3)
Establishing policy and directing operations for digital preservation and curation within the Air Force History and Museums Program, including ensuring long-term access and integrity of born-digital and digitized records; developing workflows for appraisal, ingest, metadata, and lifecycle management; implementing protocols for redundancy, format migration, and authenticity; and promoting ethical, context-sensitive stewardship of historical digital assets.
