It establishes policy for historical programs, reports, oral history interviews, heritage materials, museums, public outreach, and organizational heraldry. It requires accurate historical reporting, preservation of information and heritage, and integration and support of historians.
Applies to: This policy applies to all civilian employees and uniformed members of the United States Space Force (USSF), and the United States Air Force (including the Regular Air Force, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard).
The DAF will maintain historical programs across the full range of operations in peacetime and war to preserve the institutional memory of the DAF, provide historical perspective to decision makers, support professional development, enhance esprit de corps, and inform the American public. The DAF will prepare accurate, objective, and comprehensive historical reports and publications in peace and war with the intent to improve warfighter capability. (paragraph 2)
The DAF will use military history in decision making. (paragraph 2)
The DAF will document and preserve the experiences of senior DAF leaders and key participants through a program of oral history interviews. (paragraph 2)
The DAF will accession, preserve, and display Air Force and Space Force material heritage through operation of a national museum and a network of field museums, airparks, historical displays, and public outreach programs to sustain warfighter esprit de corps, educate on the importance of airpower and spacepower to the nation, foster national pride and patriotism, and maintain public trust.
