APEX is an Aerial Port workload management tool which provides Aerial Port Leadership the flexibility to determine the best time to on/offload an aircraft, based on duty schedule and air flow.
APEX Load Directors are authorized to supervise the on/offload of cargo on C-17/C-5 aircraft without the presence of a Loadmaster.
Load Directors attend a two-week formal course taught by instructors from the USAF Expeditionary Operations School (USAF EOS) at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington (C-17) or Travis Air Force Base, California (C-5).
Immediately following the formal (classroom) course, a 30-hour hands-on training class will be conducted/available on the respective aircraft.
Load Director responsibilities on the C-17 aircraft consist of operating cargo door and ramp, aircraft stabilizer struts, aircraft winch and oversight of on/offloading operations.
