The supplement assigns duties to bioenvironmental engineers, management officials, supervisors, contractors, and facilities support personnel. It requires laser worker identification, medical surveillance, eye examinations, safety training, operational inspections, and laser inventory records.
Applies to: This supplement prescribes policies and responsibilities for all military, civilian, and contractor personnel assigned to Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) and its geographically separated units not located on an installation with an active medical group or military treatment facility.
Ensure when multiple lasers or laser systems are present, designated Responsible Individuals (RIs) (appointed by letter) for all Class 3B and Class 4 lasers and laser systems will be responsible for managing overall operational safety of the laser, laser system, and/or laser area.
Ensure copies of the latest versions of ANSI Z136.1 and ANSI Z136.8 are available and referenced during operations.
Identify laser workers to Occupational Health and ILSO to ensure appropriate medical surveillance can be conducted.
Ensure personnel working with lasers receive eye exams before working with lasers if the worker is identified as a laser user by the workplace supervisor and by their respective Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) Office.
Ensure their employees receive required laser safety training before assigning them as laser workers.
