AR 600-8-7 covers retirement planning, retired pay plans, Survivor Benefit Plan and Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan services, and post-retirement support. It requires counseling, benefits information, communications, retirement applications, and support for Soldiers, Retired Soldiers, Families, and survivors.
Applies to: This regulation is binding on all organizations that provide Army Retirement Services.
Reserve Component (RC) Soldiers will receive retirement and RCSBP/SBP information between their 18th and 20th years of service, with their Notification of Eligibility (NOE) for Retired Pay (20-year letter), and 12 months prior to non-regular retirement. (paragraph 1-8)
All RC Soldiers are eligible for transfer to the Retired Reserve if they have been issued a NOE and are not flagged for adverse action. (paragraph 7-2)
RC Soldiers ordinarily become eligible to receive retired pay at age 60. (paragraph 7-3)
If a Retired Soldier loses a spouse to death or divorce after receipt of retired pay, and the Retired Soldier notifies DFAS, DFAS will suspend the spouse SBP coverage and spouse SBP premiums. (paragraph 4-8)
The Final Basic Retired Pay Plan, under 10 USC 1406, applies to all Servicemembers with a Date of Initial Entry into Military Service (DIEMS) prior to 8 September 1980. (paragraph 6-2)
